how to deal with these chargeoffs?

There are two chargeoffs on my reports that cause me heartache.

First is a Nationwide Collection for an old GTE phone bill. This only reports on TU. Account closed 5/97 and placed in collection 8/97. Of course we were intimidated by CAs back then, made check payments over the phone and were made verbal promises that they would not report it to our credit report if we paid. Yeah right! What type of letter should I send? The validation one even though I know that this was an account I had, paid it, etc...

Second chargeoff is with Airtouch cellular (now Verizon Wireless) This one reports on all three of my credit reports. Experian says that $162 was written off. I have a letter that Airtouch sent to me which shows evidence that I paid the debt. I have already contacted Verizon Wireless once and sent a copy of the letter to them. Last activity of this account was 6/97. I was reading somewhere about a delete after 5 years? I live in state of Washington. Would that apply here?

    HELP!

On the GTE phone bill, what is the "status as of" date. If the account was closed 05/97, then it should fall off in 05/04. I would start with validating the debt. Do you have proof of payment?

With Airtouch cellular the account will show on credit reports for 7 years regardless of the SOL.
State Washington (open ended accounts = 3 years). http://www.cardreport.com/laws/statute-of-limitations.html. I would start with validating the debt.

    Good luck.

The "status as of" date is also 05/1997.
I dont have proof of payment.
I will try validation letters for both.
After all those views, I appreciate you answering my question. Thank you!
