It seems that EX and EQ require a confirmation number before allowing a dispute (TU's online dispute form does not require one). I have been using Privacy Guard to get my credit report. Do I actually need to order reports from EX and EQ in order to dispute issues that I noticed on the PG report? Is there any way to get these for free? Thanks! galabar
Hey, Galabar. I'm a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace fan too! (I highly recommend that link in Galabar's signature!!!!!) Anyway, here are the answers to your questions: 1) YES, you can dispute without any special number. The Fair Credit Reporting Act guarantees the right to dispute, in fact. However, you may not be able to do it ONLINE without some such number. 2) SURE, you can use your PrivacyGuard triple-bureau report as the basis for your dispute. 3) YES, you'll get a report for free once the CRA has handled your dispute. (Experian sometimes sends just a dispute summary -- yay or nay -- after disputes, but THAT will include a confirmation number as well as a telephone number, and they will provide the full report at no charge upon request at that point.) To get the ball rolling for very little cost, here's what I would do. Using the PrivacyGuard information, prepare your disputes in the form of a written letter. Mail those to the three CRAs. After the disputes have been handled, you'll receive the three reports (or the two from Equifax and Trans Union and the summary sheet from Experian). At that point, begin the cycle anew with another set of disputes. There's lots more to credit repair than traditional credit bureau disputes, so I would encourage you to peruse the INTRO threads atop the board if you've not already done so! Keep us posted how it goes. Doc
Wow! Great info, thanks! Yes all, please check out www.daveramsey.com if you get a chance. It could change your life. Thanks Doc! Kevin
Oh, one more thing. All of the accounts in the PG report have the last few digits X'ed out. Unfortunately, some of those accounts are so old that I don't even no the numbers anymore (and are closed, so the issuer probably doesn't even have them anymore). Can I just mail the bank name and and account number like this: 1234567XXXX or do they want the entire account number? Thanks! galabar
I started out in May exactly the way Doc just said, it worked perfectly. 2 of the 3 CRA have the X's (or *'s) on your account numbers anyway, the only really important info is the name of the CA (or OC) anyway. After these disputes go thru you'll get new reports and you can go from there.
