Hi guys! I took a few months off from this, but now I'm back to finish up. I had a couple of tax liens from unfiled taxes. They've been filed, and refunds (whoo hooo!) issued. Do I contact the state to get them off? Is there a special form to fill out? Anyone know??
ok....so I'm a little tired.... I know they won't come off this soon. I need to get them to show zero balances.
Contact whoever it was you paid the taxes to (IRS?) to have them update the status of the liens. I know when I paid mine, the IRS did not bother to update. Then, when I found out, and contacted them, they gave me docs to send to the court and the CRA's. Like an idiot, I did it that way. Apparently, the CRA's have the docs on file and I cannot get the paid liens removed by disputing even though the case files are archived. Paid tax liens are reported for 7 years from the date of payment. Tough penalty all by itself!! Mine will come off next year, however, they are most likely not affecting my score much at this point, best I can tell. They are not reported on one CRA while they are reported accurately on another, and reported with duplicates on another. The scores do not reflect significant differences. The CRA reporting the tax liens accurately is my lowest score. The CRA reporting with dupes is middle, and the CRA not reporting the liens is highest. Can't get the dupes off either. I quit trying when my score dropped after the last dispute - I think the "verified" date is affecting the score, and like I said, I'm pretty sure they have the docs I sent.
Ok, thanks! I definately know not to send the paperwork. I'll call the state & have them change the reports. It's filed with the county, so that's where I get confused. I'll start w/ the state. Thanks!
I hadn't filed the taxes. When they were finally filed, we were owed a refund. They had filed liens based on their estimatations. Sorry for the confusion!
State income tax (Calif). I have a self employed & totally lost as to what to do with the paperwork. I finally pulled it together & took to an accountant. It's all squared away now, but it's still showing as money owed in our credit reports. The state filed & reported, but the local county courthouse is 'verifying' the balances. I can just see them now passing the buck. I'm going to have to deal with that now, because I don't want to give the cra's any paperwork like breeze said.
Can't you go to the county court house and inform them that they are veifying inaccurate information? They are in violation of the FCRA are they not. ?
The issue is proving that they were given to opportunity to verify anything. I would first check with the courthouse and see if they have been communicating with the CRA at all. If they certify they have not been contacted regarding a dispute, BAM! you got 'em!
Ok.... I'm a little more awake now (I work nights). My hubby's the one who's self employed btw. I first tried disputing the reports to see if they would come off. At the time the balances were accurate info. I had heard that county records often are not verified, so I thought what the heck, why not try. They came back verified. Since then, I got hubby's stuff together & filed the back taxes. We even received a refund. Therefore, we no longer 'owe' them money. Since we hadn't filed, they had made estimations as to what we would owe. Now I want those balances off. Like breeze said, I really don't want to send the proof to the cras. I've heard that the county courts archive their info after about a year, so I want to dispute & remove down the road. I've also heard that tax liens don't fall under the same guidelines in the sense that they'll stay on your credit report forever if you carry a balance. I also don't think there is a SOL.
