I haven't seen this addressed anywhere on the site. Appreciate your INsight!

How does one go about disputing an account when the only information available on the credit report looks like THIS?

Collection Agency (11 characters- alpha numeric)
    Original Creditor Not on record
    Account Number XXXXXX
    Whose Account Individual
    Date Assigned (Date)
    Date Reported (Date)
Amount (in dollars - very small)
Balance (in dollars - very small)
    Balance Date (Date)
    Date Last Activity (Date)
    Collection Status Unpaid
    Status Date (Date)

I have no clue as to the identity of either the collection agency or the original creditor.

    Thanks!

Dispute it, online if you have to, since you can just click the "dispute" button on the tradeline.

    Thanks.

The thing that has me scratching my head is how a CRA can get away with listing a collection agency by just a NUMBER!

How the heck are you supposed to know who you're dealing with (or how to dispute, i.e., what grounds), if you don't remember getting a bill from them?

The funny number is probably the CRA's internal number for this Data Furnisher (presumably a CA). You could call and ask them who it is and what their address is. They are required by law to provide assistance to consumers in interpreting credit reports and resolving disputes with DFs.

While you are at it, file an FTC complaint.

What good are consumer credit reports, if they obfuscate the information needed by the consumer to check them?

Thanks so much. I finally figured this out (by matching up dollar amounts from other CRA
reports), but what a LOT of work! (No WONDER so many people have messed up credit files!)

    Thanks much!
