How would you handle this?

There is a collection on my report that I want to get rid of before next year when I apply for a home loan. Here are the details:

    _______________________________________________________________________________

    <Collection Record>

    Updated: 4/2000
    Placed: 2/1999

    Balance $2817

Status as of 4/2002: Collection Account

    _______________________________________________________________________________

The SOL in PA is 4 years, so it should be up as of 2/2003, right? IS there a way to begin the valiation process before that date without causing them to file suit?

You have to determine the date of last activity. The date it was placed isn't necessarily the same. If the 199 date you gave is in fact the DLA also, I would definitely leave it alone until after the SOL runs out.

    Andrew,

They've filed suit, that's why there is a judgement. What you want to do is not give them the incentive to try and renew the judgement prior to it's expiration. I agree with tmitchell. Just keep your head down and hope it's not renewed.

    keepmine,

What do you mean they filed suit? I have no record of any suit or resulting judgement.

Okay then, wouldn't the date of last activity be at least the placed date? The was never any activity on my behalf on this account, so it would have to be no later than 2/1999, right?

    Andrew,

Sorry, I was thinking of something else when I responded. I dunno, this close to the SOL running, I think I'd try and leave it alone.

    Andrew,

Dispute the account with the CRA. Collectors are the worst at keeping records. Many don't want to be bothered verifying information.

The worst case is the account comes back verified.

    martig4,

Wouldn't that method be likely to "reactivate" their collection activities? They've been completely dormant thus far.
