I just called Experian to get an account number for a new listing I no nothing about which is showing up on my credit report.

She said they cannot give out account numbers!

    What the heck is this!

She said it is their policy.

I said this information is mine on my credit file and you will not give it to me??

    Yes that is correct.

This information will allow me to dispute this account with the furnisher more easily.

She said she was sorry but couldn't give it to me.

    Isn't this against the FCRA??

    Anyone?

I'm about to file another lawsuit against Experain.

Actually... that's for your protection. be happy they don't give out your account numbers over the phone...

it doesn't take much effort to get all your info and then impersonate you... so be happy they're trying to be careful...

for once, they're doing the right thing

They've verified everything else over the phone with me but I understand what your saying.

How bout the credit report they send me, why can't the account number be on that??

I understand how someone could try and steal your identity with your social security number but an account number???

I don't think that is likely to happen.

If I already know the person's social security number and tell them that and they verify it as being me then why can't they give an account #?

Doesn't make sense, I thought I was by law allowed to know everything on my credit report and this is not everything!!

I have to agree with you tac. I can see scrambling numbers for the online version, maybe, but only at the consumers request. Certainly the paper report sent by Experian should contain the true account number.

I have several student loans listed. All of them start with my SSN and then are truncated before the actual identifying numbers. Now, since they are different amounts I can figure out which is which, except when the amount is reported wrong.

Plus, some are listed with a positive status, and I want to be damn sure when I dispute that the good accounts don't get removed!
