Congratulations and good luck with your new job Marci! I have a friend who is a PhD in biotechnology and she went through a tough time finding post doc positions and so I can relate somewhat. Good Luck.
Marci, I missed this thread earlier too...first, CONGRATS! The new job news is wonderful Reading your new job description, I chuckle to think that Jim and I wondered whether you were still a UG on the nextcard thread. Now THAT would be an impressive UG, LOL. I learned some things just from reading your posts on this thread (as usual, I might add.) Let me include a few points. You wrote, "My AmEx Blue is at the lowest it will ever be - 9.99% apr. I'd love it if they sent me one of those nice 5.9% BT for the life offers that they match with a new credit line. But it seems they only send this out 2 years after card membership." Actually, my Dad and I (joint account) got one of these after just 9 months of membership, just FYI--current line was $10K, this offer would take it up to $20K. Interestingly, my own $20K blue line was never granted that offer, even tho I HAVE had that for more than 2 years. "My Cap One is at the lowest it can be - 8.99% - but I like the skipped minimum payments." They gave me a new line on a platinum with all the no hassle features, 0% for 8 months, then 7.9% fixed. It isn't called "no hassle," oddly (I confirmed this with Mr. Cooke, it's a marketing thing, apparently.) Might be worth a pfb or something. The line was for 20.5K, but I'm sure it was that large because I included a $14K BT with the online application. Just a couple more data points for you and other readers of this thread. Happily, you won't need to be scheming anytime soon, sounds like
A big CONGRATS on your new job, marci!! You have truly been blessed. You deserve it!!! I was worried about you for a moment. P.S. Enjoy that pay raise. I know you will put it to good use. A layoff or the possibility of one sheds an entirely different light on finances ( too bad some of us don't think about that sooner). It gives us a reality jolt and forces us to do more financial planning (which is a good thing). I work in the telecommunications field (we all know how hard that has been hit) and believe me, I am keeping expenses low, saving, investing and have completely diversified my 401k. I don't want to be another victim like the employees of Enron and WorldCom. I feel so sorry for them.
Thanks, Miles. I am definitely making an e-fund and retirement a priority now - as well as working on a more stable career. Being destitute is scary...
