Oh, Hurray Jen! First no jobs, then 1 job, then 2 jobs!
You sound super excited about the dispatch job. Why is that? What does it offer that you're missing?

When Butch says that 6 figures is min wage for y'all, is that his modest way of telling you to "go where the money is?" They're both important, and now you have a choice.

I liked your puns. In fact recently in my state (TX) a 911 dispatcher was reprimanded when he received a call from a woman calling to complain about her teenager's unruly behavior.

"Well, what do you want us to do, come over there and shoot her?"

You might have to be from Texas to find that funny. Or, it could just be universally funny. Made me laugh!

As I said earlier, I firmly believe things happen for a reason. If you hadn't lost your job, this opportunity might not have come up.

I hope you get the dispatcher position, which seems to be the one you want. But if not, take the other one. It may be the way you meet the person who will give you your NEXT job after that, which could be even more money than the old job.

Things will work out. Best of luck to you!

I took a personal banking position with USBank (don't know if i should say or not). Pay kinda sucks, but great benefits and commission structure. Plus i think they have good products. plus they can fund my education should i go to school to become a CFP. and if i ever get my credit fixed i plan on semi-relocating and they have a lot of locations.

I realized that as much as i want the 911 job i have young kids and couldn't handle having to work holidays (they are still young) or evenings (and miss their sports, etc).

And before anyone tries to hunt me down there - Jen is a VERY shortened version of my name (not what i go by in the real world); the "z" was actually a typo when i originally signed up. LOL!

Well, you can quit stalking. I'm leaving now and going to work on my paper!!

Good luck. Take advantage of the educational benefits. If they'll pay for college, go. Even a class at a time will get you there eventually. I spent a lot of years getting my bachelor's, and even more getting around to the masters!!

WARNNG: STUPID VENT ON JOB I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED YET!

So, when i accepted this position, I told them i need two weeks off at christmas. HR agreed and told me to let manager know. I just get email from manager telling me not approved as they don't approve vacation this far in advance.

Worth raising a stink about it?

Re: Re: Re: I lost my job today...

I think I'd write a letter to HR with a copy of what you got from the manager. Say in the letter that a condition you have to accept the job is the time off, but the manager says it's too early.

Ask them if there is a way to make this part of the offer. That way you're not just requesting vacation, it's part of your package.

Some places will do something like that, some won't. But I don't see how it can hurt to ask and have documented that this was agreed to by HR.

Good luck. Keep us updated when you can.

I don't know how much I'll be online either. Spent most of the weekend doing a paper for school. Now I need to pay bills and set up my new computer!

Re: Re: Re: I lost my job today...

Wow - I can't believe it has been this long since I lost my job - over two months. I said I would update yesterday and I didn't. Or wait - was that today? See, i'm losing my mind! LOL!

Job is great - almost. They failed to tell me that every other week I am at a different location, so one week in my office, one week in another office - sometimes as far as a two hour commute one way.

So, needless to say, I have been interviewing with other companies but still within financial industry. Two of which are within a couple miles of where i currently live.

So my dear friends of CN that is why you hardly see me - i seem to live in my car! I am so excited to see all the participation at CN! Enrollment is up and there is ALWAYS someone on! How exciting!

I did want to add that something Ontrack said tonight that reaffirmed my decision to change jobs. I am loyal to a fault and even though i was looking, i found myself finding reasons to continue this ridiculous commuting. Ontrack said the path you choose today will determine where you are in five years. So, thanks you to Ontrack for reminding me that i don't want to do that for the next five years.

I do love this job, great people, great products, mediocre pay, but i get to really help people in the community with making sound financial choices. but i can't change jobs within the company for one year. i won't last another month i am burning out that fast.

so, there is my update! hope all is well with everyone and if you have a thread that needs an answer, just keep bumping it and one of us will get to it. i unfortunately don't have time to go back through the ones i've missed, so let us know if you are still waiting for an answer or response!

Re: Re: Re: I lost my job today...

I know how you feel, jenz. I also have a long commute, but by choice. The jobs that pay well are in the metro area. I choose to live in a far-outlying area. But I don't have children and I love to drive.

My commute is my quiet time. I have changed jobs to get an easier commute. It's about the same number of miles, but it is a much better drive, not sitting in traffic.

So, between commuting, working long hours, and school, I'm not here as much as I used to be either. I also try to check in occasionally, but it's usually when I'm procrastinating and trying to avoid school work.

Re: Re: Re: I lost my job today...

I forgot to add--good luck in your job hunting.

Two things I've always heard. First, it is easier to find a job when you have a job. I'm not sure why, perhaps your attitude is not as desperate.

Second, I heard that it takes about a month for each 10,000 in salary that you want. So if you want a job making 50K, expect it to take you 5 months. For $100K, 10 months. For $20K, two months. I don't know how valid that is, just something I heard.

Re: Re: Re: I lost my job today...

Thanks for the info Hedwig! I hadnt heard that either (about the one month per 10k) but i think that would be right because the higher the income, the more applicants per job.

I did want to add that my two hour commute is to only go 30 miles - from one side of the metro area to the other. eek - yes, that is correct. i get to drive 15 mph on a freeway designed to do 65. LOL!

i've been lucky on my job searches. i'm sure most that have read this thread know i lost my job on 5/3 and had a job offer a week and a half later. this time 'round i sent out 3 resumes on 6/27 and had three telephone calls within an hour timespan on 6/29 which resulted in 3 interviews being scheduled. i have two of them this upcoming week.

    job search tip ahead:

what has made me successful in my job search is my attitude. i'm polite but aggressive - almost arrogant in my approach. i have never been to college, but have been in the banking industry for the last ten years - all of which have been in middle management or below, which is what i love to do. i'm not afraid to walk away from an offer, i'm not afraid to ask the salary range in the first interview, and i am bold enough to ask "when can i start?" and "why would i want to work for your company?". i'm good at what i do and i have no problem saying so.

so what i share with you today is pat yourself on the back, and remember this: they are not hiring you, YOU are hiring THEM to employ you.

Re: Re: Re: I lost my job today...

    Sounds good!!

I've made the comments many times that my company needs me more than I need them. I got that from others I've worked with. It's all the attitude.

I almost quit several times recently. I basically like my job and my company, and the benefits are great. But when it gets overwhelming, I just tell myself that I don't really need them--there are plenty of other jobs out there!!
