The Secretary of State has unfairly increased Illinois residents Drivers License Fees. Contact Information The cost of consumer renewal fees have jumped from $10 to a whopping $30 dollars. This is not targeted at all residents. Just people between 21 & 68. Consumers need to contact Jesse White to complain about the increase. In addition consumers should contact their Illinois state Representatives & Senators here: Illinois General Assembly - Member List Illinois General Assembly - Member List Please contact each of them to let them know that this is not just not nominal fee increase, this is high way robbery.
What a rip. States are really hurting for revenue, so I'm sure there will be a lot more of these fee increases to come, no matter where one lives. I love how our government can triple the price on something and think it's no big deal. They figure people will just shut up and pay because it's a necessity.
I have already shot off an e-mail through the site, next I am going to look up my district for the rep and senator. I was floored the other day when I went in to renew my license. I thought maybe it was just high cost for the town I lived in, and that if I went to a nearby town I could get it cheaper, but the lady there said it was state wide. They also did this a few years back when they raised the license plate fee, I think it use to be like $48 and they jumped it up to like $78 so that was a $30 dollar increase. I hate living in Illinois they think the people here are made out of money to keep doing stuff like this.
Got this letter back from Jesse White saying he is not the proper direction to send letters, so you will need to write to the reps and senators. Thanks Thank you for your email concerning the recent driver's license fee increase. First, I would like to point out that I do not have the authority to raise, or lower, any fees within my office. Only the General Assembly and the Governor have this authority. As you know, effective October 11, 2009, the driver's license renewal fee increased from $10 to $30 for those aged 21 - 68. This increase was initiated by the General Assembly in House Bill 255, which was passed by both legislative chambers and then signed into law by the Governor on July 13, 2009. The additional fees collected do not go to my office, but are deposited into the State of Illinois' Capital Projects Fund. I understand that these are tough economic times for everybody. In fact, over the past few years my budget has been cut each successive year, and we are doing more with less. I remain committed to finding additional ways to deliver the highest level of customer service without further burdening taxpayers. Sincerely, Jesse White Illinois Secretary of State
How long are your dl's good for in IL? You have to look at that. I live in WI and I think ours went up a little too but they are good for 10 years! That means that revenue they were once counting on yearly will be reduced to an increase is understandable. If you will be paying that yearly, that would be a legitimate complaint. I have relatives that live in IL and I believe yours too are good for at least 10 years.
No unfortunately they did not extend the useful life of our drivers license - they are still only 4 years before having to renew them. As far as I know it has always been 4 years here. That would of been nice if when they changed the price they extended the period it was good for. Thanks,
Are you sure? I thought my sister had told me that there's were good for a long time and she does live in IL. Also, at least here in WI, it wasn't something that they announced. I didn't know about it until I went to renew the which was in 2000. When I went back to renew it 2007, it had been extended by another year. Now I don't need to renew until 2015!
Yeah I am pretty sure, I just renewed my Driver's License this month, and the card now says expires in 3/1/2014 - so it is just 4 years. It might be that I answered certain questions on the application than what your friend did. They did specifically ask me if I suffered a mental illness to which I said yes. So it might be that they are wanting a mandatory 4 year renewal on me. Plus I have a vision problem, so that might be also. My husbands is also being renewed in 4 years, he has a physical disability. That might be the difference. I will have to check on that.
You know, that could be or I could be wrong or be thinking about someone else in a different state. I'll be talking to my sister either later today or tomorrow anyway and will try to remembe to ask her. If I do, I'll post. That really sucks though--I think ours in WI is $35 and that's for 8 years!
I talked to my husband who has amazing recall of past lengths between license renewal, and he said he got one here at 16 then had to renew at 21 - then he said his next renewal was like at 30 - and then his next renewal will be at 34. So from what he is saying it is all messed up on how they do it. I just don't have that good of memory.
