wondering if anyone has had any luck in getting providian to lower their interest rates? i realize all we have to do is call, but is there a magical line i can use? my husband has his own acct., i paid mine off and closed it out since they wouldn't lower the interest rate for me. also, at the time we got the mortgage, i had 2 cards with amounts on them, my husband had no amt. due on his visa, and we closed out the other accts., so i decided not to be put on the mortgage app., is there now a way that i can have my name added on so i will get some of the good credit too? and my final question, i have a chevron acct. with 0 balance and a macy's with 0 balance, there is no chevron in my state and macy's would be quite a trip. is it better to have these accts. stay open, or should i close them as per consumer request? my only actives left would be 2 m/c's and a vehicle we are paying on. i don't plan on trying to get more credit anytime soon, except for trying to get another car loan next year.

I am still a newbie here but I'll try to address your questions.

    1. Providian: I have a Providian gold which I have gotten the interest rate lowered to 16%. Not great, but better than the 24% I had. All I did wall call and say I wanted to close the account. The CS asked why and I explained that I had a CapitalOne card that was much lower and would utilize that instead. They immediately offered to lower the rate. On the other hand, my mother did the same thing and they wouldn't charge the rate for her. It may depend on who you get on the phone.

    2. My husband is not on my mortgage since I bought the house before I met him but it's my understanding you can add someone onto your deed for $25 or so.

    3. If your Chevron and Macy's cards are in good standing, I would keep them open. It will help your card utilization since these are at $0 and lengthen your history.

    My 2 cents

thanks phan...i was talking to my mom about it, and she is all for closing the accts., she hates credit cards. but i do think you are right about keeping them open. our mtg. company sold our mtg. to chase manhattan and we hadn't even made our first payment yet. i guess i will have to call them up and ask.

If you treat credit cards RIGHT...they will treat you RIGHT...(IN MOST CASES)

People who HATE credit cards usually don't know how to use them...

I use credit cards AT ALL TIMES with just a few exceptions...

My upper limit of interest is 9.99%

I use credit cards to save "TONS" of money.

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF...CASH AND CHECKS ARE NOT FREE TO GET OR USE.

my mom would rather pay cash, my dad doesn't give a rats behind, so my mom rushes down to the bank and pays off the balance. wish i could!!

Can't address your other issues but if you want to keep your Macy's card "active" (so Macy's doesn't close your account from inactivity) try their website www.macys.com and order some stuff online. If you're on a semi-strick cash only type budget I would only order things I needed to replace, such as clothing, small appliances, etc. Macy's has great sales so I would buy only the items that are on sale.
