i realize this may be a bit odd, but bear with me here...

as i was watching my 1 yr old tonight i wondered whether i could add her onto one of my cc accounts and have a card issued in her name? if so, i could use that card on her behalf for the next two decades, which would leave her with some awesome credit at, say, 21 years old.

there must be a reason nobody's doing this. is there a minimum age a person has to be in order to be added to an account?

    thanks.

FINE PRINT...MUST BE 18...(SS CARD HAS A BIRTH DATE IN THE RECORDS).

But CAPITAL ONE has a program for 16 and 17 year olds...KINDA LIKE A CO-SIGN CARD.

ah dangit, i thought you have to be 18 only if you try to get your own card, not if you're going to be on your parent's account.

    thanks, pal.

You have to have an SSN for a child these days before you can claim them as a dependent.

YEP...1 YEAR OLD NEEDS SS# TO BE CLAIMED ON TAXES...

IF YOU CLAIM 12 KIDS YOU BETTER HAVE 12 SS#'S...

The IRS cross checks with SOCIAL SECURITY records...DOB AND SS#

My cousin found that out the hard way. Claimed his new son as a dependent but DID NOT get him a SSN out of privacy concerns etc. Well the IRS denied the claim and even when he offered to send certified copies of the birth certificate, they refused. Of course his company's insurance plan balked at not having a SSN to id the child but they eventually caved in and assigned an id number.

So while the baby doesn't have a SSN, he does have a frequent flyer number with about 15,000 miles in his account! Whenever my cousin goes on travel to give a lecture, he takes the baby in a PAID seat. He said this annoys some airline people because they got on a way overbooked flight and at first they wanted him to move the baby into his lap and check the car seat. He said no, the seat was paid for. He had to show them the eticket receipt for both tickets before they changed their tune: they tried to get them both to move to the very back of the plane because they wanted to give the baby's window seat to a businessman who wanted on the plane. Again, he said no, their seats were preassigned 4 weeks prior and the businessman can sit in the back for arriving late!

my daughter got her SSN at about 3 months old. i've been declaring her as a dependant, of course, and rightfully so. but i had no idea that the IRS would refuse had she not received her SSN when she did.

learn something new every day.. :)

THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE NOW HAS A CHECK BOX ON IT...FOR INSTANT ORDERING...

IF YOUR BABY WAS 6 MONTHS OLD ON APRIL 16, 2001 YOU MAY NOT HAVE GOTTEN THE SS# YET, SO THE IRS DOESN'T REQUIRE IT...

    JUST AN IDEA...COULDN'T HURT.

OR ANOTHER IDEA...50,000 MILES ON THE BABIES ACCOUNT PLUS A FULL REFUND...

My nephew was born last Nov. 5th. They told my sister that he couldn't get his SS card until like 3 month or so, so she filed income taxes in Jan. without his number.

GUESS WHAT? They sent her the refund check MINUS the amount for his dependant deduction. She had to get a SSN asap and send it back to the IRS... then she got the rest of her money.

You need them RIGHT AWAY now. Especially if they are born at the end of the year.

I THOUGHT YEAR 1 WAS EXEMPT BECAUSE THE SS OFFICE DOESN'T WORK THAT FAST...

evidentlynot any more...I've even heard of some hospitals shoving the SSN application forms into mommy's hands (with the bill) as they boot her and baby out the door. Worse yet, you have to tell some hospitals not to fill out the application and send it in for you--it's a hospital courtesy, you know.
