I made the decision a few weeks ago to switch to our personal and business accounts to BoA. I have the business account opened but not a personal account yet, waiting for DH to have time to go in with me to do the paperwork.

It'll take a few weeks before we can close the accounts for good - paychecks are direct deposited and insurance is direct debited.

1*What's to prevent a bank from putting holds on whenever they want,
if they can legally collect NFS fees when your available balance drops below zero? The hold drops off and you're left holding the bag.

    too_poor,

It actually is correct that they assessed the 105 in NSF fees. When there is a hold placed funds are not available. I know some banks do not include that in your balance, until it is cleared, even though the funds show.

The bank clearly didn't break any laws in this instance.

What's to stop them from placing holds just to collect fees?

my bank will not place a hold on checks less than my available balance AND (+) Personal line of credit.

So if i have 800 in the bank, i can CASH (as in walk right out) a check to me for 9800. Except the bank has a no-cashing a check over $1000 rule but they bend their rules.

credit unions are easy to get PLOC's and it does help. because my available balance is my loc+balance. The $1000 rule is a joke, my atm visa portion is set to $10000 per day, CASH ATM = $400.
Can i get my VISA portion reduced and ATM raised? SORRY NO CAN DO. You must come in to get more cash.

    grrr.

See if you can get a LOC with no fees. They come in handy if you make a mistake and write an extra zero on a check or something.
