My friend's hubby had an out-patient sugery last year. They had insurance and paid what the insurance co didn't upfront to the Doctor. The insurance co. went bankrupt before paying their part and now the Dr. office has turned them over to collections for the insurance co's. part. Are they obligated to pay? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Were they still covered while in the hospital? If so then I beleive that the insurance co is responsible, but if they went bankrupt before the stay in the hospital, then your friend could be sol.

Let me guess....you are in Florida?

At any rate, you are not SOL. Contact your state's insurance department. All insurance companies pay into a guarantee fun to cover outstanding claims of any insurance company that goes under. Quite a few have gone under in FL. A lot of them wee scam operations anyway.

You insurance department will pay the claim out of the fund. :)
