IRS audits?

I was audited, I guess, they sent me a revision to my 1999 return, where we owed $7000 (including of course, all the penaties and interest) Ultimately, we agreed, and are paying it back, however, even though they say it is all random, is it really? Once you have been audited once, is the likelihood greater than you will be again? The error came in that we both changed jobs and cashed out some and rolled over some of retirement from jobs we left, and didn't get one of the 1099s, and I guess the computer caught it. We usually do TurboTax, and I am wondering now, if I should just pay someone to do them. I am just paranoid now. Any experiences, good or bad?

I think it's a fact that if you are audit once and fail, you would be audit again in the very near future and again, and again, until after you pass with flying colors.
