Is there a 180 day rule?

I have an open account on my reports with date of last activity as 5/96, balance 2029, past due 450, status I5 as of 10/97.

I read somewhere in a couple of places (don't remember where) that if an account is more than 180 days past due then the debt must be declared uncollectable (charged off?). That they can't continue to report it as active with an overdue balance being owed. Is there anything to this?
