Is validation the first step?

Okay, so I've been a member for a little while. I mostly read the stuff going on because I've never had a problem to deal with. However, my husband had some problems a few years ago, and we thought we had cleaned everything up, but apparently we've missed something.

Exp. is the only CRA showing this item for DH. It is in collections. It lists a law firm trying to collect the amount of $130. It says that the status is past due as of 2/2003. It says that the account history is Collection as of 2/2003, 9/1999.

Now, one problem is that the item seems to be listed twice, but with slightly different information. The CA is the same, but the amount is $123. The OC is the same. The account history however, states Collection as of 2/2003, 11/1999.

Okay, here's the scenario...we haven't received anything from this law firm. We just happened to find out about this collection when we purchased a car late last year. Exp. is the only credit report we hadn't checked in the past, which is why I think we missed this item. DH got a call about two years ago from a law firm (he doesn't know the name) saying that he owed x amount of dollars for such and such. He told the guy to fax him information and the guy said ok. Well, the guy faxed him a sheet of paper (not letterhead, just a white sheet) that simply said: Mr. DVS owes x amount of money to xxx. Thatâ??s it! DH figured it was a scam since there was no other information on the paper. He never heard from the guy again.

So, I guess my question is, what do we do? I read the link for newbies, as well as many other links and threads, but it all seems to apply to people who have been contacted by the OC or the CA. I guess itâ??s possible that he has been contacted, but didnâ??t know it true.

Thanks in advance for any and all help. Iâ??m sorry if this has been asked, I searched as best as I could, but still felt a little lost.

Have you first tried to dispute this with the CRA? I would just dispute both initially and if it doesn't get removed then go back and dispute one as a duplicate account and then go back and verify with the CA/ATTY. I would try to dispute with the CRA first.

I thought that might be the first step. Thanks for the help!
