I have been paying monthly on a medical bill for my husbands knee surgery and every month the check is accepted and cashed. The hospital wants more (higher payment) than we can comfortably pay on our disability income and we told them what we could afford and finally after much haggling the financial office said fine, so I arranged my automatic payments online through my bank. Suddenly this past week I got a notice from a collection agency with the now lowered amount on the bill as being past due. I'm at a loss as to why it was sent to a collection agency since I have been making monthly payments and they have been accepted. I don't want to deal with a collection agency. I'm just not sure if I am obligated to pay them or continue to pay my automatic payments. As it stands right now we have very good credit I really don't want this to ruin our rating. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks for reading
Hmm. I would first get in touch with the original creditor and ask them what gives. If you have auto payments set up, you'll have the dates attached to all of these payments to lean on. It's really unclear why this debt was sold since you're keeping up with it... Call the OC.
This is what my communication would sound like, keep in mind, I am more assertive. But at least I close my letters with, "Have a great day!" (a) I refuse to deal with the CA, and (b) I am judgement-proof because your income comes from disability, and (c) if you want to see one more penny, you will recall the account from the CA, and resume dealing with me directly. HINT: Judgement-proof means you can choose to waste your money, and not see one cotton picking cent, and spend well over several hundred dollars in wasted court fees for the privilege, or you can be civilized and continue to collect a monthly check for whatever I can afford to pay out of my disability check, but only if you choose to deal with me, directly. BTW: I will make sure that your CA, has to write me regular $1,000.00 checks for violating the FDCPA, so I thank you in advance for your kind supplementation of my disability income.
