First I'd like to say that I've learned a great deal since finding the site last week.

Here is my situation, in 1997 my mother opened a joint account with Visa (don't know the bank at the moment). The account was supposed to be joint between my mother and father but the account is showing on my CR. What should be my first step in getting my name off the account and my father's on it?

Has your dad checked his CR to see if it is reporting? Is your name very close to your Dads name..like a Jr or something? ARe you an Au on the account? This may be some reasons why it is reporting to your CR's. If neither are the case and it's not reporting your your dads CR.... then your mother would need to contact them and find out who is on the account and what SS#'s. Then go from there.

    Good luck

My dad and I have the same first name (Charles) but different middle names. This isn't the only time this has caused a problem for me but it is the only incident that adversly affects my CR.

The CC is not on his CR and my SSN is showing on the account as an AU. My mother has written to Visa telling them that the name on the account should be Charles L. and not Charles D., and asking them to correct this error. But Visa has refused to do anything at all.

So you are an AU on the account?? Does it show on your Credit Report as joint or AU? I was able to remove all AU accounts from my report by disputing with CRA, not mine belongs to primary account holder, please delete.

How is it your social security number is showing on the account, and not your dads? All she needs to do is contact whichever company is issuing the card, tell them she know longer wants yo to be on the account, they'll cancel your card, and she'll tell them she now wants to add your dad, and give HIS SS#.

My EQU CR doesn't show the account as either joint or AU. I'm going to have to get new copies of my CR's and compare them.

I'll have her do this. Should it be done with a letter or a phone call?

Any reputable company will do this over the phone without hassling your mom. If for whatever reason they give her a hard time, do it in a letter, and send CRRR.
