How can I find out what the "worst thing that could happen" would be in my state (NC)? We simply cannot pay off our credit cards, but we do have a tax refund of around $10,000, and I would like to offer this money to our creditors as settlements. If they refuse to settle, and we cannot pay them the full amt., then I know at that point they can obtain a judgment against us. In NC you cannot garnish wages; can they lein our home? We have no other assets.
