How can you tell whether a collection agency that calls regarding an old debt is one that has purchased the debt or is truly collecting for the original creditor as a contracted agency to collect on their behalf?

Are there any common threads whereby one can determine which it is, or any lists of collection agencies by name that show whether they are most likely JDB as opposed to collecting for creditors?

CA name, OC name, and age of the debt are usually the best determiners, although not 100% full proof.

How do you know based on age of the debt? If its a newer debt they are collecting for the company?

Alot of times yes. Like I said, its not foolproof. Household tends to sell their debts off rapidly.
