Hi. I am new to this and I really need help. We were just served tonight District Court papers regarding unpaid medical bills. My husband spoke with them about 3 weeks ago and asked if we could make payments and they stated no. I am just not sure what are options are at this point. There is no way possible to come with the amount. (almost $3,000) The paper work stats, "any response or notice of appearance which you serve on any party to this lawsuit must also be filed by you with the court within 20 days of service summons." We are a family of 5 on 1 income and money is very tight.

Is there any advice that anyone can offer. I am just scared of my husbands wages being garnished and losing are house or car. Thank you.

Sit down and decide what you are trying to do, e.g. do you need more time?

Your financial situation isn't relevant to whether or not you will need to appear and perhaps answer this lawsuit to avoid a default judgment.

Garnishment of wages and accounts are often means used, depending on state law, by debt collectors once they get a judgment. You probably will want to familiarize yourself with the laws of your state so you can see what your risks are and what you can protect.
