Kohl's approved, Lowe's denied

My husband was approved for a Kohl's account yesterday with a 1k limit! Our others are only $500!

I then sent him to Lowe's. I knew they would pull the same report, and I was pretty sure he would be approved, but he was not. The csr at Lowe's asked if he had applied for anything else, he told her about Kohl's that morning. She said they were connected and they would automatically turn you down if you apply for more than one account.

I guess they must be issued by the same bank. I didn't check that...spoiled my perfect(haha) plan!

Should my husband call Lowe's and try to get reconsidered? Has anyone tried that with them? I don't know his score, but he has three paid tax liens, all in dispute, and six or eight good trades with no lates, some new.

    Thanks for any advice!

I have both Lowes and Kohl's and unless Kohl's changed their card servicing, they are not issued by the same bank.

Kohl's payments are addressed to Kohl's and go to Milwaukee. Lowes are Monogram and go to Atlanta. At least that was the way Kohl's was last month when I paid them off. Maybe MCCBG bought their card services.

I would call Lowes and ask if they can do a manual review and over-ride. MCCBG used to do that.

Thanks- the person at Lowe's told my husband they were connected somehow, hopefully she is incorrect. It certainly sounds like they are not from your experience.

Good luck to your husband, Terri. I just checked my credit reports and Kohl's reports as Kohl's Dept. Store. Lowes reports as Lowes/MBGA.

Unless Monogram owns Kohl's in some unknown way, I think they are separate.

I have a Kohl's account as well. Does yours report to all three bureaus? Mine used to, but I've noticed that it currently only reports to TU and Equifax. Not Experian. Are you experiencing the same? Thanks!!

Thanks again for the input and the good wishes! We are hoping to buy a house soon, it will need some work, and we really want that lowe's card ! He tried to call last night, they were already closed. He will try again Monday.

In the mean time, I am trying not to use up the limit on the new Kohl's card...my kids love that store. Bought my daughter a gown for the opera last night...stuff for other kids today...very dangerous!

Do you guys know what your scores were when you were approved, or the status of your reports?

Hi OtherTerri. I don't have a Lowe's card, but if you're talking about the Kohl's card, I can't remember. I know my score at that time (1993) must have been pretty low (if they even used scoring then). I was about 4 or 5 years out of chap 13.

I have had great luck with Kohl's. They have great products and customer service is awesome.

BTW, I really don't think they are associated with Lowe's. Like dlo64 stated, our payments are written directly to Kohl's and sent to Milwaukee. I think the rep at Lowe's just assumed that Monogram handles Kohl's because they deal with the accounts of many retail stores.

Good luck getting that Lowe's card!! :)

Miles-No it doesn't report to all three. Only TU and Equifax as well.

I have had both these accounts since 1999 and I seem to remember my scores then around 650.

I'll bet you would get the same response if you called and Lowes were serviced by Household Retail Services instead since Household services a lot of retail stores as well. LOL

I think MCCBG and Household have the retail store credit marked cornered.

Does anyone know if Kohls gives credit to us post bankruptcy people? I wish you could just apply online with them. I Hate getting turned down in person! :)

Maybe I'll send DH, he could care less what they think! Does Kohls let you add another card holder?

I really need a retail line to rebuild, I think I'll wait about a year and try them. The two I have that survived my bankruptcy are on the west coast and now I live on the east coast. Does me no good now! :(

I don't know about the post bk stuff (mine was 10 years old when I found credit net this year).

I do believe they are going to allow my husband to add me on after he receives the Kohl's card.

Our first retail card was earlier this year, with pretty bad credit. - a Sears Plus account. Only for large purchases. They will not give us a regular Sears account yet. I am not really happy with their credit people, but if you need any major items, you might try them and see.

I believe there was a thread a while back about which creditors approved people post bk. You should be able to find it by doing a search.

    Hope this helps.

I don't think Kohl's will do a recent post BK. I had a friend that applied about three years post BK and was denied for that reason.

From what I have seen with my friend, it is generally harder to get the retail cards post BK. If you get some secured cards and prove you can handle your new credit, you could apply, get the denial, and call to see if a supervisor will manually review your report and over-ride the decline.
