Can anyone tell me if I have a legal leg to stand on.

Here's the situation: I rented an apartment years ago and left owing a balance of $500. The apartment has since been sold to another managment company. But before it was sold, the old management turned my account over to a collection agency. The collection agency is now reporting the account under the new management company. to the credit bureaus. I don't the new company who on various occcasions when I called to make arrangemnt w/them said that they do not recognize any accounts prior to their take over. I have tried to get them to write a letter stating that but they refused. What can I do? I have gone to court and they have dismissed the debt with the old company.
