I got to thinking about a Legal Name Change. Does anyone have any experience with this? Would the CRAs find out about it (i.e. does it get reported as a public record)?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated...

what state are you in? In CA, you can change your name on the driver license as long you sign a statement that you are not doing so for ilegal purpose(?!), my cousin has his name change 3 time this way, including his last name. Well the iD# remain the same. He didnt go though Court at all,..

Would you change your S.S. #. That is the main tracking tool. On my reports I have a number of names on my reports that were picked up through the years. My first name first, my middle name first, my last name spelled incorrectly, etc. All this came through incorrect reporting to the CB.

SS# can only be changed by SSA for just a very few reasons...

I have done a legal change...first and last name.

EXP only shows my new name...think my file split when it changed.

TU split my file, but merged them and erased my old name info

    EQ still shows all names.

Takes a while for them to either catch on or update the info. Applying for credit is a little harder until the new info is updated. Best thiing to do is when you change, let your tl's know, so they will update you report the following month when they report to cra's. After everyone has your new info, you can dispute your old name.

It's interesting that this came up. I got married about two years ago. I just got all three credit reports, and guess what--Equifax has never picked up my married name! The other two have. I refinanced my house since I got married, and the new mortgage is reporting, but the name change was never picked up!!

I can't imagine any reason for changing a SSN.

Any one know of it happening, or a reason.

Well maybe if you're in a witness protection program.
