I was wondering how long a +30 day late payment stays on your credit report. It is the only negative thing on my credit report. I'm going to be looking into a mortgage loan in the next year and was hoping it might be gone before then. It was reported on May of 2000 on a credit card.

    Thanks for your help.

Was the payment actually 30 or more days after the due date, or did it just miss the due date by a few days? This doesn't affect how long it will stay on, only whether it should even be there at all.

Yes, it was more then 30 days. I would say about 45 to be exact. I thought I paid the bill online but I had not and since I pay that bill online I never read any of the paper statements. It was one of those life lessons learned. I was just hoping it might go off after 4 years.

If that's the only late, try a goodwill letter to the original creditor if they'd update that entry to never late, or at the very least, say something to the effect of "in the past 4 years, never late" instead of "one time 30 days late"

If that doesn't work, then try disputing with the CRA as "never late"

If this is a closed account, be careful disputing NEVER LATE with the CRA's. The CRA's often just delete the entire account. Might not make a difference to lose the account, but if this is one of your oldest accounts or don't have many tradelines, it could hurt to lose it.
