Well after taking care of my T-mobile issue, I'm now faced with another cell problem!

I agreed to lend my name/credit to a friend of my brothers to get a cell phone from U.S Cellular. I never received a bill, it was always sent to the guy so I never had to think about it. A little over a month ago I got a letter from US Cellular about disconnection, followed by a payoff amount for $280. I told my brother to tell the dude to pay this. He assured me it would be taken care of.

Well, it wasn't and now I received a letter from Risk Management Alternatives, Inc.

It says the balance is $359 and the account has been placed with this company for collection. On behalf of US Cellular, RMA reports debts with balances of $50 or more to one or more CRAs, to be posted as a collection item to my credit file. However, if the balance is paid within 35 days from receipt of this letter the debt will not be reported.

First off, I don't understand why the balance is now $359 when the US cell letter said $280. Either way, I just want to pay this off on my own for now. My brother will pay me back and collect from his friend later. However, after reading all the horror stories about RMA I'm not sure how to proceed. If I pay this right away, what is the likelyhood that RMA will still screw me??

Could I or should I contact US Cellular and try to pay it off through them?? Or will they just send me to RMA?

    Please advise....

I would plead identity theft and let them handle the guy!

Lessons learned. NEVER let anyone else use your good name.

I'd be carefull about the ID Theft thing if your sig is on any paperwork!! Request validation as normal. Right now they are under the FDCPA only until they furnish info to a CRA. They have to cease ALL collection activity until they validate your request. That means no phn calls, no further letters, no bills etc. Be sure to tell them about the limited C&D order for all future correspondence to be in writing via postal mail. They cannot call you that way.

If you want to let them walk into a violation, wait about 45 days. RMA almost always does. If you want to pay it, get it in writing that in return for full payment, they will not report to any CRA and the account is paid in full. IN WRITING IS IMPORTANT!!!
