today i received a letter from a collection agency that says xyz co has been contacted by a consumer credit reporting agency to confirm adverse information contained in your credit record. We have verified with the credit bueau that xyz has placed adverse collection information in your credit bureau files; this information refleects an unpaid account refetted to this agency for collection as indicated above. You have the right to inspect your credit record and to correct erroneous information.(duh) as any adverse credit history information may negatively affect your ability to obtain credit. you may wish to resolve this matter now. please call us as soon as possible.. well wtf i havent heard from them in 5 yrs and i dont owe them the original debt so what to do?????????
Yes sometimes disputing will open up a can of worms, they think and hope consumers don't know the skinny on debt and they will be able to collect. How old is this debt?? Is the SOL ran out for collecting it?? If it is just send them a ceast and desist letter, this will stop them from contacting you, but they will still report and probaly verify it.
The SOL is the statue of limitations. This means the time period which they can legally collect a debt. You need to check your states SOL and see if it has expired.
It means they can't legally collect the amount. They may still try to collect and if they would try your defense would be that the SOL has expired. You mentioned this was not your debt correct?? If so have you tried to get them to validate this account??
i havent heard from them in several years.. and no it is not mine i guess tomorrow i will send a validation letter because i want this mess off all 3 of my reports!!!!!!!!!!!
