I have this store credit card (Computer City), it closed down many years ago and as a result I decided to just throw out the store card while cleaning up my house. When checking my credit report (Equifax), I see that the original name of the account "COMPUTER CITY" is on it and it shows the account as closed/transferred but I also see the same account number as an open account under "COMPUSA". I checked Transunion and it shows my full account #, so I decided to enter it on Compusa's website to see if I can access the account and it says it cant find my account #. I called the automated customer service # and it cant even find the account. On the Transunion report it says that the card belongs to "BENEFICIAL USA". This account does not show up on the Experian report. On the credit reports it says that the "Date updated/Reported" is 03/2000. The account was opened in 1997. I have not received any communications or mailings or a new credit card regarding this account. The account balance is 0 according to the report. I believe the bank that is in charge of Compusa is HSBC and is the same company as BENEFICIAL USA? Can I assume it is closed because Compusa's online account access and telephone account access can't find the number and its been 5 years since the card issuer updated the info with the credit reporting companies.? All my other credit accounts are updated with last updated date in the year 2005. This is the only one that hasn't been updated. Should I ask Transunion and Equifax to get updated info about the account and if they cant find anything to just delete it?
Is it reporting as a positive tradeline? Do you want the account closed, such as for security reasons, to not leave a dangling open account you never use? If you want the account closed, call up HSBC or Beneficial, and tell them to close it, send you a letter confirming it is closed for your records, and notify the CRAs that it was closed at customer's request. You might send a follow up letter to them confirming that you are closing it and want confirmation and CRA reporting as closed by consumer. FCRA requires them to notify CRAs when a consumer has requested that an account be closed.
