Back in December, I missed a payment according to my credit card company. I actually made the payment, but it went to my then separated wife's account. At the time I was not an owner nor user of the account. Evidently a mistake on my part. I did not realize this happened as I never got my next statement (was in the process of moving), and sent a blind payment in January. The company won't reverse the 30 day overdue. I did get my ex to call in with me and we corrected the payment with them. I've disputed the transaction with all 3 credit bureaus and am awaiting word from them. I supplied all the documentation showing the payments to and where, even including her credit card statements showing the payment into and then the reversal a week ago. This is insane as when I went to pre-qualify for my house, my credit was 792 and now it's 712 or so. It is the only blemish on my credit history. Once it's all said and done, I'll be dropping that credit card, but not until after the house purchase. They have not been cooperative in the least, especially considering it's a 14 year old account. Any advice anyone would give?
Don't cancel that card, it will lower your score! By all means do not cancel your credit card. Your total available credit will drop, and this will lower your credit score. It's always best to keep your credit cards, using them once every few months just to keep them open. As to the your missed payment. Yes, it is a bummer and unfortunately there is little you can do. However, did you try speaking to a supervisor at your bank's customer service. They may (or may not) have the authority to do something, but it is definitely worth a try. On the bright side, while a missed payment lowers your score, by making all your bill payments on time, it will rise back up within a few months or so. Best of luck in rebuilding your credit!
