...at a restaurant. The cashier gave me two credit card receipts, but not the card back. I left without my card.

More than 24 hours later, I wanted to use it again. I went back to the restaurant, and they had set it aside in the office. It's good they know me there, and also that it was an accident on her part and not a fraudulent scheme. Otherwise, it could have been a lot of trouble.

My first big credit card scare, and probably my last, since I tend to remember these things. A few things I learned:

    (1) Always make sure you get your credit card back.
    (2) Always check your wallet for the credit card before you leave home, a restaurant, or a store.
    (3) Use the card sparingly. That narrows down the possibilities when you do lose the card.
    (4) Keep all your credit card receipts in your wallet for a while. That helps you remember where you've been.
    (5) Try to do business with people you know. That way, you remember names.
    (6) Try to do business with people who know you. That way, they feel accountable when they find your credit card.
