Wow, they are the first company that made me feel like they wanted my business. They offered me everything to keep my shell gold MC but I just didn't use it and I didn't want to have too many open cards, so I closed it but man did they want me to keep it open. I like feeling wanted by a credit company:) Is any other company willing to do these things to keep their customers? I have never experienced this before.

Well, today was a great day for you because you won. Regardless of your usage of the card, it's one less potential debt to worry about.

One day, I will only have one card in my wallet: my driver's license.

    YMMV

IT VARRIES CUSTOMER TO CUSTOMER...CARD TO CARD...COMPANY TO COMPANY!!!

CHASE let me GO!!!! Didn't even TRY to stop me!!!

I REAMED THEM ABOUT MY BOGUS 30 DAY LATE (THEY AGREED IT WAS AN ERROR)...THEN THEY REFUSED TO RE-EVALUATE MY APPLICATION FOR A SECOND CARD WITH-OUT A "HARD" SO I SAID FORGET IT!!! THEY DID A "HARD ANYWAY!!!
THEY REFUSED TO CHANGE THE "JACKED" RATE ON THE CURRENT CARD!!! (EVEN THOUGH THEY AGREED THE 30 DAY LATE WAS BOGUS...AND THE 16.24% "JACK" WAS BASED ON THAT 30 DAY LATE)!!! I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO DUMP THEM...

On the other-hand...WIFE got a "JACK" 16.24% letter BASED ON "YOU WERE PICKED~~AND BECAUSE WE CAN"!!! They said PLEASE STAY!!! 7.99% FIXED BT AND PURCHASES!!!!

    No library card? JK

Man, that's a strange way to look at it around here... Even if you can pay cash, it's still good to have excellent credit.

I had a similar discussion with First USA. I called to close my Marriott Signature Visa and they asked me "IS there anything I can do to keep you as a customer?"

Against my better judgement I agreed to keep it open for a purchase rate of prime + 3.74%. This is a really good rate for a rewards card, but I too want to reduce my number of cards.

I will probably call again, but this time I will stick to my strategy and not let anyone talk me out of closing.

    Regards,

No kidding... Just think of all those airline miles that you would have to actually pay for! And all those store card incentives that you wouldn't get...

My credit is excellent. I want to pay off my home in the next 6 years. The fewer opportunities I have to use credit, the better the chance of achieving my goal.

I see myself with one major card in my wallet by the time the mortgage is satisfied and over 60 positive trade lines.

If anyone's using Microsoft Money, try the Debt Reduction Planner feature. Plug in all your debts and see how long it takes to pay it off. Look at all the interest you save (or money) when you tweak it to your monthly budget.

Best thing to do is to charge on a rewards card and to pay it off every month. I have a GM Card and a Cap one sock drawer card. My goal is to hve GM and another card as the main cards and get rid of the Cap One. I may take a hit for a little while for short average age of accounts, but I don't care. My next card will be one that I can keep for years to come.
