MBNA Decision Reversal

Last month I received in the mail an invitation from MBNA to apply for their Platinum 'Select Rewards' Card. The bank offered a 1.7% introductory interest rate for 6 months on all purchases and balance transfers. I called on November 13 and was approved for $5500 on the telephone by a credit analyst at MBNA (to whom I was transferred by the first representative I spoke to). I have a Sears and a department store credit card with interest rates of 21.9% and 21%, respectively. I requested of the credit analyst that the balance of these two accounts ($3300) be transferred to my Platinum card and was advised that my card would be sent and my balance transfers completed as soon as possible. On December 5. 2001 when I had yet to receive my card I called MBNA and was told that my application had been denied. Surprised, I explained that I had already been approved. I was put on hold twice and for about 21 minutes when I was finally connected to a 'senior credit analyst' who advised me that in fact I had been approved but that after a second review by senior management I had been denied. I have NO LATE PAYS and every single one of my accounts is "NEVER LATE". I relied on the truth of my initial approval and have made spending decisions for the holidays that I would not have made if I had know MBNA would reverse themselves in such a haphazard way. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I do not feel that this is an ethical (is it legal?) way to treat consumers and would like to document a complaint to an appropriate government agency. Any suggestions please.

That's a bummer, but reading several posts on this board recently it doesn't surprise me. Many members have been tricked on the same stunts. I would try Planetfeedback or maybe a top manager at MBNA to state your concern to. Tell them per their approved decision you took on additional debt because you had been promised a card by a MBNA representative. Did they tell you the reasons for your disqualification? Hopefully, for Christmas they will get coal in their stocking.

Just send them an ANGRY letter via Planetfeedback and state your whole case. Someone will call you.

A couple of suggestions? Did you receive a letter giving you the reasons for why you were denied? You should receive a Tel Number ect.. where you can ask that it be reconsidered.. A sears Trade is just as good as a Major Credit Card.. Dept store Trades not the same.. It may work if you try it again by calling.. It seems as though you went through a long period of time before you found out that you were declined.. Best of luck..

MBNA = much bad news always

My parents have had them on three different occasions, they were never treated very well.

Tis a bummer that they cramped your holiday plans.
I hope it all works out.

MBNA has been very good to me since I started with them last year. I've gotten large CL increases (from 5K to 16K in a year), substantial APR reductions and lots of promotional APRs. I recently had a problem when I negotiated a convenience check that was supposed to be at 4.7 and the statement showed I was being charged 9.9. After I faxed the letter advertising the lower rate, they fixed the problem.

MBNA had been approved for three accounts including Quantum(upgraded from Garfield Platinium Plus),Barne&Nobles Platinium Plus Mastercard and Apple Instant Loan(Gold Option Account). All these approval they never changed their mind afterwards. From time to time they increased the credit lines from all 3 accounts. They haven't done anything to me and their customer services is very nice.
