Medical collection question

I got a letter from a collection agency about a small bill for charges that my former health insurance company didn't cover. It's the first I've heard of these charges, but I understand that medical bills automatically go into collections the first time out. Since reading this board I'm paranoid about any 3rd party sending me a bill. The charges sound right, but should I ask for validation of the debt anyway?

Will this kind of thing go on my credit record as well?

Yes, it can and will go on your credit report. I would send a validation to the CA right away, even if the amount sounds right.

Have you check your CR's, to make sure they haven't already reported?
