Channel 4 news (KRON) San Francisco just announced that MICROSOFT announced a HUGE security access problem for all versions of WINDOWS and all users of the EXPLORER browser.

Apparently, through the Microsoft ".NET", and EXPLORER, hackers can EASILY seize control of your operating system and control it from their computer.
THEN, they destroy your HARD DRIVE!!!

EVEN if you do not have a version of the Microsoft .NET installed, if you use EXPLORER, you need to do this now....

    IMMEDIATELY EVERYONE:

    Go to:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Have the site SCAN your PC for all updates, then immediately install them, This could be MOST SERIOUS with Cable or DSL users, but everybody should INSTALL THE MICROSOFT SECURITY PATCH NOW!

It does not say if NORTON SECURITY would stop this unauthorized computer seizure.

    I installed 4 updates.

Amazing you have to find out on the NEWS 4 show!

    (BUMP for importance level!)

Hey, I built the first DSL line in California - I understand network security and leakage.

    Protect yourself....

Thanks Al Gore, or, I mean, Dogman (just kidding)

I'm Windows 98, is this serious?

    Thanks.

The update is the same whether you're running Win 95, Win 98, Win 2000, etc...

    Just go to this site:

    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

then click on "Product Updates" and it will tell you which security patches you need to download (be patient, it takes a minute or two). Add the updates under the heading on the page entitled "CRITICAL UPDATES AND SERVICE PACKS".

It's best to check this site at least once a month, to see if there are any new security updates to add to your operating system.

Hey Dog, I found out two days ago via MS's critical update notification subscription service!!! They "reach out" and grab me, when I log on to the net, and tell me there is a critical update that applies to me. Then they offer to take me to it.

It's annoying to be interrupted, LOL, but I don't miss out on anything important, either.

I don't know what I am doing wrong. I have been trying to get on transunion for over a week but they won't let me. I did the update you said to do but it still doesn't work for me. Anyone that can help, i would appreciate it. Thanks

This does not have anything to do with not being able to get on Trans Union's site, I am sure.

Have you called them to see what the problem is? Are you trying to purchase a credit report? Tell us exactly what you are trying to do at the TU site and we will try to help.

But... I don't think it has anything to do with the Microsoft critical update.

THX for the EXPLORER URL :)
Breeze - how do you get these notifications?

I get a "balloon" at the bottom of my task bar - telling me new updates are ready to be installed.

BUT, these were not there - at least YET....

Sue: Go to the top of your browser, click on HELP and then select ABOUT.

What versions of Internet Explorer does it say you're running?

It says browser 6. I think that is what is needed. I also did the patch upday today. I just don't know much about computers. I appreciate the help. Thanks

Here ya go Dog. The part I have in italics is a link on the MS site - I can't give you my link because it knows I am running win98, and takes me there. Should take you to the download for your OS. You install it, it grabs your browser when there is a cirtical security update, makes you say "yes" or "later" hahahaha!!!

Ahhhh OK, there is a fix, I believe. But I am not sure what or where it is. Start a new thread titled "IE6 question" and someone will tell you. I am still running 5 because of all the bugs I read about in 6. Some people even went back to IE5 because of it.

You might also try searching the board for the topic "IE6" cause there was a big discussion when it first came out.

I am running ver 6 on a 2000 system with no problems. I do install all MS security updates upon notification.
