My son received a flyer in the mail today offering discount coupons for military personnel this weeekend. The problem is, he is a minor, so obviously not in the military.

I called the 800# on the flyer and got the name and phone number of the co. from which Kmart purchased my son's info.

I called the company, Act 1 Lists, and asked 1. Where did you get my son's name and address, and 2. Why do you think he is in the military?

First they sent my to a voice mail no. where I could leave my name and phone number for a return call. Do I want to leave my name and unlisted phone number for them to add to their database? Don't think so.

I called back and asked for a real person, who then yelled at me because I would not give him my phone number. I asked him to mail the info to me, and he said "He was not going through all that." We argued, he said " the conversation was ridiculous," and I was "withholding information!"

You've got to be kidding me, I'm withholding information because I won't give him my unlisted phone number? Finally, he calmed down and agreed to mail the info to my son. Supposedly it will take two days to investigate the source of the info.

I don't expect to hear from him, but I really want to know how this happened. How does my child end up being listed as an active member of the military? I intend to follow up on this.

So now I am checking into privacy rights. Anyone have any good tips for protecting privacy?
