The term "communication" means the conveying of information regarding a debt directly or indirectly to any person through any medium. and---

---Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall...ie send proof of validation

Is reporting to the CRAs comsidered indirect 'communication'?

If it is, then within 5 days of reporting the debt they must send validation to the consumer?

I don't think so. It would be nice though if it did.

The reason I say no is because they have used plain language and qualified the communication as being "initial" and "with a consumer." That broad definition of "communication" must be narrowed down to fit within the other words of the sentence.

Of course, I'm neither a lawyer nor a judge.
