Mastercard and Visa are only clearing houses. The actual creditor is the bank servicing your account. American Express prefers that you only have one card, but you can also have an Optima, and a Blue, and get additional cards for family members and others. American Express is the acutal creditor through their subsidary, American Express Centurion Bank.
