I will be applying for a mortgage in a few months, to coincide with my house lease being up. I am also refiling the past 4 years of tax returns (long story, but I just recently pried my sons SSN from his mother while he has been solely my dependent the past 4 years).
I'll most likely be getting a VA loan.
    question:
will I need W2's or tax forms when I apply? I'm hoping to avoid them pulling or requesting my tax forms since this will be sort of a mess while I get everything sorted (I expect some problems initially as I'm pretty sure the reason his mother was withholding his SSN from me was because she had been claiming him as a dependent).

We had to provide the last 3 years of tax returns I believe, maybe 4. I doubt you can get a conventional loan without filing taxes. They would be too concerned about liens popping up.

I'm RE-filing..thanks for the info though, as it was this sort of "real world" info I was looking for. I always see under docs required "w2's and/or tax returns", was curious if just w2's were ever actually enough.

Generally speaking, if you are applying for a full doc mortgage, you will be required to provide 30 days pay stubs as well as the W-2 for either 1 or 2 years. You will also need to sign a form 4506, which will allow an auditor or investigative agency to pull your Federal Taxes. I wouldn't worry too much about refiling your taxes and how it will affect your obtaining a mortgage.

In most cases, the only time you are required to provide the actual tax return is when you are self employed.

    Hope this helps.
