I hope someone can explain why I can not qualify for a Sears credit card but I was approved for a mortgage? I applied for the card several weeks ago and I was approved for a mortgage last week.

Because a mortgage is based on equity, collateral and other considerations that are secured. A credit card is unsecured and if you do not pay it, they have no recourse. I know it sounds ridiculous but security is much easier to get. Also, Sears may have thought you already had enough unsecured credit.
