Ok, so the girlfriend closed on our house yesterday. I call this morning to check on my U-Haul reservation, and they say they will call be back later with the details. I made this reservation many weeks ago, so I get a call back right before they close stating that I will have to drive over 3 hours to pick up my truck!! My move is 40 mins away from my current residence!! REDICULOUS. So I tell them that I drove by their location today and they had plenty of trucks outside, and she states "those do not run very well, and we do not think they can go 40 miles" What the hell is this???? She says she will see what else she can do and clal back... I call the 800 24/7 number and they state they cant do anything, I have to talk to regional scheduling, which is now closed! The lady at the local store calls back and says she thinks she has some sort of arrangement for me, and I need to call her first thing in the morning, this was left on my voicemail. I have to move in the morning, have people coming to help etc.. and U-Haul is rediculous, they basically state that a reservation doesnt mean anything!!! I am so mad they call me the night before I have to move!
When you rent from u-haul you get sh**ty equipment that has not been maintained with some serious safety issues. Believe the guy who had a tow dolly self destruct while towing a classic car worth a lotta $...... I'm in the Army. I've moved a lot, and I've rented from them all. Trust me: Rent from Penske. They have good customer service and they guarantee the truck you rent will be less than 3 years old. Dancer
I've rented from Uhaul, Budget, and Penske... moving stinks no matter which one you go with, BUT believe me-- Uhaul is the worst!!
I will not use them again EVER, I will try to get this truck, because I am not sure what else I can get, and I need to move tomorrow.... I already sent a PFB, I am so pissed, moving is bad enough without this BS.
ugh! U-haul is horrible, IMHO. Middle of Oklahoma, truck overheated, 100+ degrees, called from pay phone in the middle of nowhere, town of maybe 200 people, Sunday afternoon no less. Best I got was, "Can you get it to a shop to get looked at?" Wow, don't want to go back to that memory. ---- Worse yet, moving comes with a million inquiries--new phone service, power, cable, etc etc, everyone wants a credit score. Really hacked me off when I moved 5miles away, never had a late payment, Southwestern Bell still put a hard inquiry on my TU for transferring the service.
DON'T ACCEPT THE "S.O.P." we pull a credit report... I would rather do a DEPOSIT!!! Also you can get a letter of reference from your present companies...
U-Haul sucks. When my fiance and I moved in together in 8/99, we "reserved" a 10 foot truck about 2 weeks before the move date, to be picked up at 11 AM the day of. So, we show up at 11 sharp on moving day, and the guy looks at me and says, "Well, we won't have a truck for you till 2 o'clock". Mind you, my fiance's brother had driven down to MD from NY to help us move and was going to be going back that night, so we couldn't afford to wait. I proceeded to ask the guy WHY they'd take a reservation if they had no intention of honoring it. He made a few calls and found us a 14-foot truck--clear on the other side of the city. We had to drive through some really bad neighborhoods just to get there; I mean there were prostitutes walking around and everything. Then when we get there we stand in line forever and when we finally get to the front, the jackass behind the counter wants to see my reservation form. I explain that I made said reservation over the phone. So he asks for it again. So I repeat my original statement, a little less kindly, at that. He then says to me "ma'am, I'm not trying to be combative, I'm just asking you a question". Well, maybe it was the 100 degree heat, or the 100% humidity (a typical Baltimore summer), but I just flipped out on the guy. It was pretty funny--my fiance and his brother were just standing there looking at me like I'd lost my mind, and other people behind us were applauding (apparently this guy was an ass to everyone). Needless to say, we got to use that truck almost for free when I got through with him. I'm not advocating that approach, just relating how crappy their customer service is and the lengths one has to go to just to get a damn truck. I will NEVER do business with their company EVER again! Dancer is right: definitely go with Penske! I have used them in the past as well and found them to be great in service and vehicle safety. Whew. Thanks all for letting me vent. I missed you guys.
UHaul sucks ass. We ran into the same "truck isn't available" bullshit too. It was Memorial Day weekend and people were lining up at 10am but all the 10' and 14' trucks were gone! The ass behind the counter was yapping at us that "reservations don't mean dick" to him! Calls to the 800 number got us nowhere. But then I remembered that there was a small gas station out in the rural area between Dallas and Fort Worth that had moving stuff. Yep! They had trucks! LOTS of them! LOL I should have charged people for that tidbit of intel!!! Anyway we got a larger truck, unlmited miles, blankets and a dolly for less than our original reservation! Oh yeah, it was Ryder. Try Penske, Ryder or Avis.
Two years ago, I reserved a 24' Ryder over 2.5 weeks in advance. Showed up to pick it up, and they were in the process of renting it out (the last one -- the one they got for me) to the guy in line IN FRONT OF ME! Told me that reservations didn't mean shit if another dealer called them and asked if they HAD a truck and, if they did, they HAD to give it up. I blew up. 800 number did me nothing. I had always rented from Ryder (many years), and I will NOT rent from them again. Just moved some stuff this past weekend. Went with Penske this time. Gave me a 24' truck from Saturday morning until Monday morning, and only charged me one day (told me this up front). They were late getting the office open on Saturday morning (about 15 minutes), so they gave me as many moving blankets as I needed at no charge -- and I didn't even have to ask. I was very happy with Penske. Ryder blows, and they have lost a long-time customer. U-Haul blew it well before Ryder.
