My friend's mom hasn't worked in AGES...her husband died 12 years ago. She was a Domestic Engineer. So after his death, she has been living off of his pension, life insurance, etc. This lady LITERALLY HAS EVERY CARD YOU CAN IMAGINE. Mostly ALL of the department stores to be exact. I was amazed. I was at their house over the holiday and we were talking about credit. Her mom has a drawer FULL of cards...and they are all ACTIVE! I couldn't believe it. She also had vintage cards as well. My friend filed BK and wants to rebuild. First thing she did (since she had no more cards....and she had EVERY card as well) was add herself to almost ALL of her moms cards! The only card that she's gotten since her BK was Providian Visa Gold.

So we were chatting and she was telling me how a dealership would NOT let her mom co-sign for her grandson's car. They said that she had TOO MUCH AVAILABLE CREDIT! Her income is very modest...she doesn't need much to live on.....like $1500/mo. So when she told me that, we started a project on finding out EXACTLY how much available credit she had. We started calling all the creditors to see what her limits were. We stopped at $210k because we had to leave. Still had like 6 cards (2 bank and 4 retail left). FYI....the most generous card she had was the AMEX Optima Platinum with a limit of $80k. The limit initially was $10k. My friend applied for the card because she was getting married and her mom was paying for it. It was the "Wedding Credit Card". She got the card for her mom in July of 2000 (added herself on as AU of course) and used it for everything and paid it down or practically off periodically. I don't know what the average charges on the card were but DANG! I was blown away needless to say. You must remember that a majority of her cards she's had since who knows when...way before FICO.

Being that your mom is married to your father. I would suggest that her credit file reflects the same as your fathers. Mortgage, credit cards etc. This would explain the credit privliges!!!

    MP$40,

I bet her credit score is the closest to 900 or 850 that anyone will ever see. That's pretty impressive. A *smart* move by the daughter to be an AU on all those cards.

Yeah....don't think I wasn't trying to get a AU spot on that Optima Platinum! :p Oh, wait...I have my own now...almost forgot! :-O

What blew my mind is that a majority of the cards that she got an AU spot on were cards that she BK'd on! Companies really must not check their records. She never had an AMEX card in her name (to my surprise) so there was no hassle there. But she blew Discover up bad when she BK'd (like $30k). The reason why she did that was because I guess some or most? student loans are not eligable for BK so she wrote BT checks to pay off all her student loans (like $20k) then BK'd on Discover later on. Why 3 months after she filed did she add herself to her moms Discover w/ no problems? Blew me away...
