I just got a copy of my Experian report. My discharge date was July 2. (Have a copy of TU coming and haven't ordered Eq yet). Of course, First USA has my account listed as "Open/Past Due 120 days. As of 6/2001". (I filed in March). The other account I had with FUSA says "Petition for Chapter 7/Bankruptcy/Past due 30 days." Hmmm. same company, two different responses. Do you think I should dispute everything now, or wait a few more months to see if they get it right? The only accounts of mine listed correctly as "Included in Bankruptcy" with a zero balance were Cap 1 and sears. Discover listed me as "Petition Chapt 7/Bankruptcy/ Charged off" with a zero balance. Citibank has me listed as "Collection Account/Never late $206 past due as of 6-2001." Geez, how do these people operate a business if they can't get their records right?? I thought I read somewhere that I should dispute and send copies of my schedules showing the discharged account? (Then I read that I shouldn't send anything and let them verify it?) Or should i just list the way they should read on Experian's dispute page and see what happens? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance. Ps. I requested my report through their automated system, from a turn down of JCPenny (I expected to get turned down) I didn't get a credit score though. Do you have to pay extra to get it now??
My advice for your situation... -as far as sending in your discharge papers/list of creditors, I would do it. I sent in mine to TU and all my bk account are now right. I'd send a copy of the discharge notice and a copy of the list of creditors. Make absolutely sure to black out anything you dont want them to see. The only problem I can see with this is that this may thwart later attempts to try disputing the bk stuff off your report. I think I'm in the minority opinion on sending in bk papers, but if what you are sending only his info how you eventually want to see it, i dont see how you lose. -if it was only July 2, there is definitely room for another update in there, so at least some of it might get fixed. That being said, there is really nothing to lose sending a dispute. Send the same dispute to all 3 cras and they will likely all send you a report (so you'll have all 3 reports for free with no more inquiries) As a piece of side advice, if you havent already and have the cash at all, I would try to get a (secured) card from FCNB, CapOne, Sterling, Providian or someone and preferably two to get good history started right away. Of course being that you are hear I guess you know that already -scott
Thank you Scott!! I appreciate you taking the time to answer me! I want to rebuild at some point. I'm just so afraid of getting turned down left and right!! I hate the rejection! LOL I'm going to look into secured cards. Thanks again and take care.
I have to disagree. Never send a credit agency that kind of info. If you do, and you want to later get some of those listings removed, you can forget it. If things are being reported incorrectly, I would attempt to dispute them with the cra's first. If it comes down to it, only as a very last resort would I send them any info.
Let's play devil's advocate. If you have any tradelines written off in bk that aren't showing up on your file... then when you send in the papers they can add them. You've just decreased your score. Let's take another example. Say in a bit you want to try to clean your credit and you've already send in your bk papers. You've self verified your bk and all that's in it. Why would they ever investigate anything in the future? Also, the bigger issue is NOT what Citibank is reporting. The bigger issue is whether Citibank knows they were included in the bk... duh. they're stupid. Call Citi and see if they have the account listed correctly internally... If they do and just haven't updated their reports then you can dispute the entry with the CRAs. (and maybe get it off). If they don't have your account listed in the bk, you do need to correct it with Citibank. there was another recent thread about this. the general consensus was to NOT send bk papers to the CRAs. but it's your choice.
