Received a collection notice re: a Sprint PCS account. I have never used Sprint, in addition, the spelling of the name on the account is slightly different from mine. I spoke to the agency and they advised that it was identity theft and that they were sending a paperwork to me to complete. Problem: the collection agency reported the collection to Equifax and probably the other two CRA's and I haven't received the paperwork that they said they were sending. What is the appropriate action for me to take to resolve this issue?
If someone is using your identity, you need to file a police report. You may also need to place a fraud alert on your credit files with the 3 CRAs. The police report will also aid you in getting information from the CA or OC on what information was provided when the account was opened, to assist you in determining how compromised your identity is, or who might be stealing it. You may need to apply pressure to both Sprint and the CA to get this information, let alone stopping continued collection attempts. Don't wait for their papers. They may have just sold it, or sent it back to the OC. The CA has nothing to gain from "knowing" that the account is fraudulant. In fact, if they own it, they only lose.
