Try your local Credit Union and apply personally (first impressions can get you good rates).

How about the bank where you've had a checking account for a few years?

I've got financed before with sub-600 scores with Household Auto. Not only that, it was a second car (I'm single so I had to argue with them that i wouldn't turn my jeep lease in early) and the "new" car happened to be a 1 year old jaguar XJ! So I wasn't pulling on their heart strings to get it, I doubt they would have had any sympathy :)
I applied online, bought the car that same week.
I've also had luck with chrysler credit for that jeep cherokee lease, and i believe my scores were in the 580's then as well.

Thanks for replying. I do have an account with a crddit union since for roguhly 2 years. initially they didnt even approve me for a visa debit card, citing poor credit and one derog on chexsystems.

do you think i should again proceed with the credit union or just go to a dealer and let him have his way with me.
AT least that way , i will get financed and not incur multiple inquiries on my CR. Is there a way i can request to credit union to do a credit check ithout it showing up as a hard inquiry?.

also can anyone recommend lenders who will finance me directly instead of going through a dealer who "specializes" in bad credit financing?

Thanks for help people..your advice/input is appreciated.

have you looked at Household Auto finance? as i mentioned, my scores were in the 580's. They'll send you a check for whatever they approved you for.. you stay under that amount, you don't have to come up with any down payment. I think the req's are that the car is no older then 5 years, no more then 50k miles. You get that check from them, and then you can shop like a cash buyer. I bought my car during lunch break, and made it back to work on time :) real easy.
