I really feel I am dealing with demons in my computer. There is no other explanation. First problem: The Yahoo toolbar keeps popping up on my computer screen (I hate Yahoo). I decided to delete the toolbar. I deleted all references to yahoo that I could find, and now Yahooo is suddenly my default home page and I can't get it back to MSN where it was. This has happened before, where Yahoo took over my computer. How do I get rid of it permanently?

Problem two: I absolutely hate AOL. About two years ago, I cancelled it and switched to Comcast high speed cable (now known as Comcast low speed cable). Aol still sends me email saying that all I have to do to reactivate the service is to sign on and they will charge my credit card automatically. Every once in a whole, a screen pops up when I am using my Comcast that says we are now connecting you to AOL. I want it gone permanently. I am afraid that one of the kids will accidently sign in to AOL and I will get billed. But, I can find nothing on my computer that even mentions AOL.

Would an exorcism work? Or. should I just blow up my computer?

I have read that if we ever have a nuclear war, only the roaches will survive. In the same way, I believe that Yahoo and AOL will also survive.

    Any help is appreciated.

Changing your home page shouldn't be too hard of thing to do... Are you using Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator as your browser?

    Internet Explorer:
    - Open IE
    - Click "Tools" on top and then click "Internet Options"
    - You'll see in the window a box where you can type in a web address. Type the addy you want and then hit "Apply" on bottom right of window. hit OK and the window closes. Now when you hit your "HOME" icon you'll be at the page you specified as your homepage...

I'm not postive the exact procedures for Netscape, but if that's what you're using, let me know and I'll install it and post the info for you.

Now with AOL popping up all over the place... Have you Uninstalled all AOL from your computer?

    Click "Start"
    "Settings"
    "Control Panel"
    "Add/Remove Programs"

It'll list all installed programs you have on your computer. highlight and remove anything with "AOL" in it. See if that'll help do what you need.

If that doesn't do it, let me know... we'll get it figured out.

Thanks for your reply. I use IE.

I have deleted all references to AOL through the add/delete program. The last time I did that, two icons for AOL popped up. Then, when I deleted them, I see a yellow print across the screen saying AOL loading.

My big problem with Yahoo is that if I go anywhere near Yahoo, even unintentionally, I get the Yahoo tool bar on my computer, and freqently it becomes my home page.

My frustration is that I have my computer where I want it. These things take over on their own. That just bugs me. There should be some type of law against it.

Its my computer - I should control it, not Yahoo or AOL.

    I agree with that...

I format my computer about ever month to month 1/2 to get the junk off of it and keep it running at it's peek. I don't know if that's something you'd want to do with yours... Everything I d/l I put onto CD. I always think, "I can't get rid of that". I put it on a CD and format... I never even think of it again and rarely go through the TONS of CDs with those miscellaneous things that I "can't do without". :)

There are programs that monitor what's installed on your computer and when you uninstall it, the program picks up and removes everything (registry files included) that's associated with that program.

Have you looked in your C:/Program Files/ Directory to see if there's any folders you can manually delete that are related to AOL or Yahoo? Also, try going into your C:/Windows/Temp folder and delete everything that's in there. There could quite possibly be a file in the temp folder (nothing in there is something you need to keep) that is causing problems.

Also, in IE, the same place you change your homepage settings, click the "Delete files..." Under "Temporary Internet files" on the 'General' tab. See if that will do anything.

Since AOL has a number, you can call and complain and tell them how frustrated you are with it. Maybe after enough complaining you may get someone with half a brain on the phone that can tell you something that you can do. AOL # is 800-824-6364.

Not sure what to do about Yahoo, but I'll do a some searching on dogpile and see if I can come up with something more than these shoot and miss answers I'm trying. :)

    Good Luck!

    Some AOL info I found

"You can remove AOL through the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel, but to remove All the changes made to your registry by the AOL software you'll need to also uninstall and reinstall Dial Up Networking and any remaining AOL adapters.

To uninstall AOL: click the Start button then Settings then Control Panel, when the Control Panel window opens double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon, locate and click on AOL then click the Add/Remove button, when it's finished removing it click OK to close the window and allow the computer to restart.

To remove AOL adapters: click the Start button then Settings then Control Panel, when the Control Panel window opens double-click on the Network icon and remove any AOL adapters, when it's finished removing it click OK to close the window and allow the computer to restart.

To uninstall Dial Up Networking: click the Start button then Settings then Control Panel, when the Control Panel window opens double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon, click the Windows Setup tab(up at the top) then double-click 'Communications' and remove the checkmark next to DialUp Networking, when it's finished removing it click OK to close the window and allow the computer to restart.

To reinstall Dial Up Networking: click the Start button then Settings then Control Panel, when the Control Panel window opens double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon, click the Windows Setup tab(up at the top) then double-click 'Communications' and click to put a checkmark next to DialUp Networking, click OK to close the window and allow the computer to restart.

Ps. Remember to jot down your AOL username and password before uninstalling AOL, you may need it later to access your email through www.aol.com or for billing purposes."

Now to find something on Yahoo... :)
