    Hey all,
I have tried to close my Merrick account for 3 weeks now. I have called the (long distance) CS number and they told me I would recieve a letter in 7 days. That was 2 weeks ago. Help!

    Thanks,
    Rock

Hey Rock, my son had that card too. And he just closed it. They sent him a letter stating that they are closing his account as requested. A week after recieving the letter he reiceved his monthly statement ! And it indicated a payment due. He called customer service and they said,"oh, someone should have told you it takes 30 days to complete the account closure" they also said even though he had a zero balance he would still need to make his monthly payment, or be considered delinquent. He commented on this; saying i have no balance why should I have to pay a payment, and my account is being closed. There comment was " you 'll get it back after your account closeure is finalized. He only had the account one year, and that was enough ! I must say it did help him get other credit. But the program stinks, although he's always recieved great customer service, and prompt posting of his payments, but he's just glad to get rid of this card. If you don't recieve your letter soon, call them back. Before they mess something up.

A credit card that requires a payment even if you have a zero balance? That's a new one on me. Whatever you do, don't let Cross Country Bank hear about that one.

Only 2 weeks? It took me 2 MONTHS to get account closure letters out of FirstUSA.

OOps, correction its been 3 weeks since I spoke with them and I hope it doesnt take 2 months. Yeah it is a lousy deal J Edgar. 15 bucks a month 8 of which are monthly fees and 7 go to a secured account. Althought it isnt a "secured card". Merrick sucks, but they did get my feet off the ground.
OK, should I just cut the card up and mail it certified?
    thanks,
    Rock

    RE: Closing a cc account

YOU had difficulty closing an account. I would've have thought the author of the definate account of how to close an account

would have little problem, even with an admitted criminal organisation such as First USA.

It took three certified letters to do so. I will not call the cretins on the phone. You wind up getting transferred to a 'retention specialist' and have to endure a sales pitch about keeping the card. They don't have my new phone number since I changed it, so I'm sure they were 'holding' the closure while feverishly trying to get in touch with me to sell me on reconsidering. Sorry guys, enough is enough.

I'm keeping the 9.99% card I have with them, but as soon as they try to jack that rate up (again), it's toast too.

yep Merrick does stink. I've heard alot about them too. Their credit builder program is $500 dollars, but you can't use it. They put a $500 account hold on the account right away, so when you get it you have zero credit available. If you want to use the card you have to send them payments in the amount you wish to use, they charge maintence fee's monthly of eight dollars, a minimum payment of $15 which would leave you with seven dollars to charge each month if you pay just the minimum. After 24 months of perfect payments, no over limits they'll grant you a card up to 2500 dollars. Over all not a very good program. I'd cut it up send it back certified. along with an additonal letter stateing that this is to reconfirm your account closure. You may wish to contact the bank again and see whats the hold up ?

    RE: Closing a cc account

Well, with the one card I've closed in the past year, after being jerked around enough and listening to enough BULL$HIT on the phone I had enough and pre-empted any further by cutting up the card and sending it to their legal department, but making sure the first letters were received by the CRA's informing them that this account was closed at consumer's request, and informing the bank that the CRA's had already received this info.

Thankfully, I was never bothered or solicitated by this two-bit bank again.

As for First USA, considering I deem it a criminal organisation I couldn't imagine ever holding a card from them (besides the only one's I would consider would be the United Mileage Plus and Soutwest Airlines Platinum cards), but even with several nearby branches where I could make payments I STILL DON'T TRUST THEM for one second not to attempt the screw me, most notably by illegaly jacking up the rate on even these high interest, annual fee cards.

Actually, anybody holding an account with these crooks is walking on a very shaky bridge, never knowing when their going to cut the supports out from under you.

yes, very glad. While helpful if you are unable to obtain credit by any other means, they sure are a hassle and seem to love to charge all those fee's for processing, account maintenance, ect. And you would have to keep the account two years before you may qualify for one of the regular cards.
