My husband has a very old tradeline on his credit report with AAFES. This has been a thorn in our side for a long time and even prevented us from getting a home loan many years ago. The tradeline reads as follows: Collector ARMY AIR FORC Account Number XXXXXXXX Ownership Individual Date Open 03-1997 Balance Date 06-1997 Balance Amount $535 Date of Status 06-1997 Status UNPAID First this account was opened approximately late 93 or early 94 because we opened it to buy a video camera for our sons birth in 94 so I know it was opened before 1997. Other two CRA's show it as opened in 12-96. Second, AAFES made collection attempts and claimed our income tax for the pay off amount THEN it was sent to OCI for collection and I remember we paid them as well to clear it up because my DH works for the government and we needed it cleared. So we technically paid for this twice before we knew better. grrrrr How should I handle this one. It is old, but the status is not correct it is paid for and the daters are all screwed up. We are again wanting to buy a house and I know that the lender will want to know this is paid off. OCI is not showing up anywhere on our credit reports thank goodness so I don't want to wake that sleeping dog. Should I start with verification or validation here with AAFES? Should I also at the same time ask that all three CRA's validate this. Equifax lists it as a collection. TU and Exp list it as charged off! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had almost the same exact problem as you. I finally got it off of my reports. I just kept disputing it as NOT MINE. It took almost an entire year! It is now gone! If that doesn't work, call the CRA's or write them and tell them that the Date of Last Activity is wrong!
I had the same problem last year, went to go refinance and AAFES was listed twice. The first was supposedly (this is what I was later told by the rep) the original account my ss# the second was the charged off account my ss# plus D. I was told I had to pay this off for refinance but AAFES had taken the balance plus 3x from my tax return back in 96', They refused to send me something showing that it was paid, said I had to wait 60 days for it to report to the bureaus (but yet they had been paid back in 96') FINALLY the broker handling my loan SOMEHOW (I don't have a clue how bc I had to sit on the phone for HOURS just to get someone, as a matter of fact if the computer answering calls thought the wait was to long it would just disconnect) got a letter showing that 'both' accounts were satisfied (remember, there was only one, but they gave 2 different satisfaction dates) Anywhoo, after about 4 disputes the bureaus ended up deleting back in Sept, but I believe only bc it was to come off in Jan anyway.
Thanks. I am hoping that it will come off since it's scheduled right now to come off in December anyway. I disputed it with the CRA as not mine, so we'll see what happens. If AAFES verifies the information and it doesn't change then I will ask AAFES to validate and see what they provide. I have until the end of July to work on all of this so hopefully I'll get some positive results. Thanks again for responding!
you can ask them to validate, but unless you're in a state that says otherwise, OC's don't fall under the FDCPA and don't have to validate - only CA's do I once had 2 car leases that were each listed twice.. I had moved and they had changed a digit in my account number when it was assigned to a new payment processing office. I never got anywhere with phone calls to "creditor", and they were outright jerks about it. CRA disputes cleaned it up though, and I didn't use them for financing again.
