I pulled my credit and saw I had a collection on my account from American Collection for $51 so I called to see what it was for. It's from 1998 and the collector said it was check written at Giant Food. Then he went on to say I also had another account for $2,000 for an apartment I supposedly lived at in 1997. It's not on my credit report and I completly denied it and changed the subject to get information for the $ owed for the account on my credit of $51.

I'm totalling freaking out because now I think they may report this on my credit b/c of the phone call. He didn't press the issue after I stated I didn't know what he was talking about. Could he simply make this account from 1998 show up on my credit there is NO WAY I owe these folks this $$!

Should I send the $51 for the old collection account or do you think I'm opening up a bag of worms? I'm trying to apply for new credit so I want to get this collection as showing paid on my credit at least.

    Please HELP!

Showing "paid" doesn't help when wanting credit cards. If you pay, pay for deletion.

"IF" you pay the $51 for the CHECK...are they going to produce the ORIGINAL CHECK???

The Mortgage Broker wanted this to show as paid on my credit. When I spoke to the lady at the CA on the phone yesterday she told me what the check number was that I wrote at Giant Food in 1998. Come on like I'm going to remember a check for $51.00 I wrote in 98!

My real question is do I send them a cashiers check for the $51 to have this as being paid or do I raise an ugly sleeping lion because they now claim I owe over $2,000 on an old debt from an apartment which is not showing up on my credit at all. I don't need this to show up on my credit of course!

What should I do experts . . . of course I'm freaking out over this thing and I know I need to calm down and get a game plan! Your help is very much so APPRECIATED!

PAID may be GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE MORTGAGE BROKER...butt you want REMOVAL!!!!

...AND you NEED the ORIGINAL CHECK!!!

It sounds like the critical issue here is that you are in the middle of obtaining a mortgage. There are lots of things you could do to get this handled correctly, but unfortunately, they all take time. Any quick fixes at this time are going to result in negative information on your credit report.

If you have the time (weeks if not months), you could request/demand deletion from the CA in response to payment. But they may pursue you for the supposed other debt. Risky at best.

Since you are in a time crunch, and since you don't want to resurrect more problems, see if the mortgage broker will accept a money order in the amount of $51 payable to the CA that they can then mail out at close of escrow. This likely will cause a ding on your credit report, and the CA may pursue you for the other debt, but at least you'll have the house. :)

CAs want you in panic mode so you will screw up in their favor and they will do anything they can to get you there.
Wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't any other debt.
The CA may have just thrown that in to put pressure on the o poter to cause him to panic thinking the easy out is to pay the 51 dollars .So far it's worked like a charm for them.
