Hi, I've noticed that in addition to amex cards, the neiman marcus and saks credit cards also don't have stated credit limits on the bill. I wonder if anyone has ever found out their limit or tried to buy something expensive and had it rejected.

I have a Bergdorf Goodman Card which I believe is part of the Neiman Marcus family. They do not list a credit limit, I think it goes by your buying practices or how much they determine you can afford based on previous payment history. I found out my credit limit quite by accident while shopping in Bergdorfs. After trying on and deciding to buy a beautiful coat, as the cashier was putting through the purchase I happened to ask what my limit was. She didn't tell me she just said I had enough to purchase the coat and put the charge through. Ever heard of this before?

Interesting. I have a BG charge too. I've never been declined, but I've never tried (at least not yet) to buy anything really expensive. Great store.

I have a Neiman Marcus charge card,& they did not list the C/L when they sent the card.I called customer service & they told me my established C/L (which just HAPPENED to match my Marshall Fields c/l....how wierd).

It also reflects on all 3 credit bureaus,& they do pull a HARD inqury every 6 mths(which I am thinking of cancelling due to this reason).

I heard somewhere that the usual n-m limit is 3k, but I imagine they would raise it if you seem to be charging around that limit & paying it back on time.

wow $3k limit? thats would let you buy about 1/3 of the items in the store :) lol

or maybe a small trinket in the jewelry dept.

Neiman Marcus and Saks don't hold too much weight on CLs. Say you have a $5K credit line, but the coat you're buying is 6K...no problem, they will put it through. Plus they're very leinent with payment terms. You can go 45 days late and they usually won't report you. I guess their thinking is if you can afford to shop there, you'll pay sometime. ;)

If they WON'T tell you the credit limit...I would try buying that $6,000 coat like a week before the "CLOSE" date and then return it...(SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT)...the day after the billing date...

I opened my Neiman Marcus account in 1983. By 1990 I had quit shopping there and even lost the card. In 2000, I called to see about getting another card. After poking around in the computer a bit (I had moved a few times) the representative said, "Sir, there's no need to apply for a new account, your account is still open; did you need a new card?" Then she said my "guideline" was $1000.

I got the new card, and they've added a couple of digits to the beginning and end, but it's the same basic account number I always had.

I went on a shopping trip and spent about $980 and paid the bill in full when it came. Then several months later I went in and spent about $5000 in one day. They never batted an eye. I haven't seen any inquiries, hard or soft.

I generally pay it in full, however, since the interest rate is a yucky 19.8%. The salespeople sort of treat you like a club member, though, when you use it.

(Men: If you want to make a big impression on a woman in your life, whatever her age, go to Neiman Marcus and buy her a designer purse. I've done this twice in the last year--for different women ;) She will love you, her mother will love you and her friends will love you. Wow, I only wish I had learned this trick earlier in life!)

I'm glad you mentioned about them raising thecredit "guideline." My limit used to be 3,000, but I'll have to find out if they've raised it automatically.

We need more men like racer.

FYI: If you're feeling generous there is a cute little Kate Spade purse I have my eye on. ;)

UPDATE: Just found the inquiries on TU. Not only did I get a hard when I reactivated the account, I got another hard when I charged that large amount.

The second inquiry definitely should have been a soft. Oh well.

Saks reports your credit limit to Exp and TU. Equifax only shows the high usage.

In my case it is $2500. Still at the same limit than when I opened the account (Nov 2000.). Probably because I never have used it.

If you don't use the card in awhile, they'll pull a hard on TU. That's why I won't use them anymore.

Do you use the card regularly? I don't (wish I could but that's another story.) I use it only about once a year and instead of performing an AR, they'll pull a TU hard. Has happened to me 3 yrs in a row all around Christmas. I'm done using the card for this reason although I am going to keep the acct open b/c it's pretty old.

Geo, just reread your post and I realized that you said that you NEVER have used the card. I have received the hard inquiry pulls when I have USED the card in the store. I wasn't talking about when they updated my acct but when I USED the card to purchase something.
