I just received a brand new collection notice from an attorney that was forwarded from my old address. (i knew this was coming) I am ready to send off a validation letter, but i dont know if i want to give them my new address, in case they try to sue later. what should i do? if i use the old address, i'm not sure how long i can keep getting forwarded mail. (i'll check into that tho.) Won't they be able to find out my new address easily enough anyway? I do have a fax # i could use for correspondence. btw, this is my debt, but i'm not paying one red cent on it. Unless it gets on my report somehow, which i'm trying to prevent. then i may settle for deletion if the price is right. the original creditor is a retail dept store CC. thanks.
For what it's worth, the CA probably already has your new address. I believe that the post office notifies the sender when they forward mail. I recently moved and set up forwarding service with the post office. I forgot to notify my credit union and one of my credit card companies of the change of address for several weeks (during this time I had gotten statements from both of them - which the post office forwarded). I finally got around to telling them about the address change and they already had the new address in their system. The only way I can imagine that they got the new address is from the post office. Also, the post office will forward mail for 6 months and magazines for 3 months, I believe. HTH, Brett
>> I believe that the post office notifies the sender when they forward mail. I highly doubt the post office is allowed to do this. >>The only way I can imagine that they got the new address is from the post office. I'll bet they got it from your CR. thanks for the info tho. btw, my post office forwards for 12 months.
Read you envelopes. If underneath the return address it says "Address Correction Requested" (all of your bills will have this) when the mail is forwarded to you, the sender gets a postcard back with your new address on it.
i threw the dern envelope away i think. i cant find it. i do remember that the yellow sticker w my new address reads 'notify sender of new address' but that statement is aimed at me isnt it? i always thought 'address correction requested' notations were meant for the receiver (not the post office) too. are you saying that you know for sure that the post office gives out that information? that just doesnt seem right to me. *sigh* guess i could call the post office, lol.
The post office will send back a postcard with your new address if the envelope is marked appropriately. (My father was a postmaster and I asked him about this once) All CA's likely use this service together with skip tracing services to locate you.
It surprised me too, but the post office is the only place I can imagine they could have gotten it from. I know that they didn't get it from my credit report because so far my address has only been changed on TU... and that only happened a few days ago. Besides... my credit union wouldn't have any reason to pull my CR. Brett
Re: Re: new collection using my OLD address ok, just came from the post office. this is what i was told: I asked if the "address correction requested" or "return service requested" etc. notations were meant for the post office or for me. First she said me, then she said the post office, lol. so i just asked her 'does the post office gives out my new address to people who send me mail after its been forwarded to my new address?' she said that after a year, when the mail is no longer forwarded, they return the mail back to the sender along with a card that tells the sender the new address. that sorta irks me. I asked if there was any way to prevent the usps from giving out that info, and she said 'no, not with first class mail'. hmm. oh well, cant run forever i guess, lol.
